A Hand UP – Not a Hand OUT

El Paso Food Assistance through Angel Food Ministries

By Robert Warmath

Each month well over two hundred families and individuals have been receiving top quality food at unbelievably low prices thanks to four local host sites for Angel Food Ministries.  Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational ministry that began out of a pastor and wife’s desire to help their own congregational members who were being laid off as area factories were shutting down in Georgia.  The need nationally is so great that the ministry has expanded over the past 15 years so that over 500,000 boxes of food are now being distributed to families through over 5,000 host sites in 40 states each month.

The main product distributed is their regular or signature box of food containing enough food to feed a family of four for a week.  This is a nutritionally balanced selection of food that would typically retail for approximately $60.00, but may be purchased through a local host site for only $30.00.  Additionally, they offer a Senior/Convenience box each month that contains 10 heat and serve meals designed with the dietary needs of senior citizens in mind, containing 3 oz. of protein, a starch & two vegetables or fruit.  A third main box is the Allergen Free Box that includes foods processed to eliminate the eight top serious food allergens.  Various specials are also offered each month that usually include two different meat assortments and at least one fruit and vegetable box.  Prices for the regular boxes and specials range from about $22.00 to $45.00, depending on the item ordered.  Any items may now be ordered individually, where previously it was necessary to purchase one of the three main boxes before buying any of the specials.  All foods are top quality items from nationally known food distributors, never any “day old” or “seconds” in any of the selections.  This is an on-going monthly ministry and the menu varies slightly each month and can be obtained from any of the El Paso host sites or on the Angel Food Ministries website at www.angelfoodministries.com.

Designed to help those who need it most, there are no income requirements or qualifications to be met, and anyone can purchase any amount.  Angel Food is even able to receive Food Stamps as payment for both Texas Lone Star recipients as well as those on New Mexico food stamps.  Online orders may be placed with debit or credit cards for a $1.00 convenience fee at the host site ordering page on the Angel Food website above.  Interested persons need to first locate the host site area where they desire to pick up the food, and be certain to order through that church or ministry’s page on the website.  The host site you order through is where you must pick up your food during that site’s distribution hours each month.  Ordering deadlines are typically near the middle of each month with the pickup date on the fourth or fifth Saturday of the month.   Host sites are not able to store unclaimed food, so these will be donated to others in need the same day with no refunds or credit for future orders given to the original purchaser.

There are currently four sites in El Paso where persons may order and pick up food from Angel Food.  East: Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church located at 718 La Paz, (915) 591-5244.  Northeast: Skyline Baptist Church at 10061 Rushing Rd., (915) 755-0777.  Central/Downtown: The Christian Women’s Job Corps at 900 Arizona, (915) 525-8812 and Visitor’s Chapel A.M.E. Church at 518 N. Estrella St., (915) 759-7002.

Each site can receive orders and would love to minister to those who need this wonderful service.  Each host site has their own set hours to receive orders and may have restrictions as to the type of payment they receive.  Be sure to call the one nearest you for more information.  Host sites have also had individuals in the community or ministry that are willing to purchase food for those who simply cannot afford it.  Hours vary, but all host sites in El Paso distribute food on the same day each month.  Offering “a hand up, not a hand out” this ministry is here to assist everyone who needs it.  Please contact one of the host sites for more information.

Any church or ministry interested in becoming a host site can find information on the Angel Food Ministries website at www.angelfoodministries.com.
